1990’s Brit Art (YBA)

1990’s Brit Art (YBA) is the name given to a loose group of visual artists who first began to exhibit together in London, in 1988. They are noted for “shock tactics”, use of throwaway materials, wild-living, and an attitude “both oppositional and entrepreneurial”.

Damien Hirst

Is an English artist, entrepreneur, and art collector. He is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs), who dominated the art scene in the UK during the 1990s. Death is a central theme in Hirst’s works. He became famous for a series of artworks in which dead animals (including a shark, a sheep, and a cow) are preserved—sometimes having been dissected—in formaldehyde.

In my opinion, I really enjoy Hirst work. Probably one of my favourites as it was very unexpected yet new and original.

Angela Bulloch

Is a Canadian artist who often works with sound and installation; she is recognised as one of the Young British Artists. Bulloch currently lives and works in Berlin. Bulloch has worked in multiple media, including video, installation, sculpture, painting. In the images above her work is of sculptures made of powder-coated steel which was then painted. This simplicity holds the complex way in which the artist brings together modernist concerns of the grid, the monochrome, and the colour field with a playful engagement with interactivity.

In my opinion, I find some of her work too simplistic, however, enjoy how it is interactive with the audience.

Michael Landy

Landy is one of the Young British Artists (YBAs). He is best known for the performance piece installation Break Down (2001), in which he destroyed all his possessions, and for the Art Bin project (2010) at the South London Gallery. On 29 May 2008, Landy was elected a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. He first studied art after having been inspired to take up art professionally after having a picture selected for display on the BBC television art program Take Hart.

In my opinion, I find his work rather odd and confusing. But I like the use of random household objects and even more! I also like his etching artworks.
