Abstract Expressionism

Abstract Expressionism is a post–World War II art movement developed in the 1940s. Following its predecessor, surrealism, it followed the idea of painting or drawing bizarre compositions however differently the compositions of Abstract Expressionism had meaning. Usually reflecting the emotions and opinions of the artist.

Roy Lichtenstein

Was an American pop artist born in 1923. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied, often in a mock serious manner. He worked with acrylic and oil paints.

In my opinion, I enjoy his work as I’ve always enjoyed comics. I enjoy the sarcastic humor as its different take on serious matters within art.

Willem de Kooning

Was a Dutch-American abstract expressionist artist, born in 1904. De Kooning began painting in his free time and in 1928 he joined the art colony at Woodstock, New York. He also began to meet some of the modernist artists active in Manhattan. His influence of his friends Davis, Gorky, and Graham, but also of Arp, Joan Miró, Mondrian and Pablo Picasso. He worked in oil paint and charcoal.

In my opinion, I don’t really understand his work and don’t find the compositions very appealing.

Jasper Johns

Was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose work is associated with abstract expressionism, Neo-Dada, and pop art. His best known for his painting Flag (1954–55), which he painted after having a dream of the American flag. He was strongly influenced by the gay couple Merce Cunningham (a choreographer) and John Cage (a composer). He worked with oil paints, etching, and lithography.

In my opinion, I prefer his lithography over his other work because of its simplicity and more coherent composition.
